Abstract

Literary works are regarded as significant resources to analyze society as they reflect social phenomena in a realistic way. In other words, as the characters and the plot represent the fundamental elements to analyze society, literature and sociological analysis are linked with strong bonds. This study presents an analysis about the class and gender issues of female characters chosen from three different short stories of eminent Turkish storywriters. Class and gender issues can be considered as intersectional, thereby presenting an opportunity to the readers to analyze them simultaneously. Therefore, in this study the class relations of the female characters and how gender positions them in a society are discussed. The female characters in the stories are presented as different female images with different positions in social stratification. On the other hand, what women encounter with in a male-dominated society and how they become to be inferior to men are examined with gender discussions. Before the analyses about the stratification and gender, it will be quite enlightening to make a theoretical frame about class discussions and class-gender relationship.
