Abstract

Herta Müller the Romanian-born German author and winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature has felt the Second World War through her father and environment. She has experienced the Ceausescu-regime and social collapse caused by the regime between the years 1974-1989. That’s why she has frequently written about the destruction of the Ceausescu diktatorship on society. The political pressure caused by the dictatorship and the fear, that the dictatorship has had on the people of Romania is described through four friends who resist against the regime in “The Land of Green Plums” published in 1994. Due to the political atmosphere, Herta Müller has handled her experiences through characters. Therefore, autobiographial traces are found in the novel. Like in her own life, Ceausescu’s party and policies are criticized by Müller, she has shown the regime responsible of the novels protagonists tragic events and fear.
