Abstract

Iraq was under the Ottoman rule for nearly 400 years. During this time period, the idea of independence did not emerge in Iraq. After the detection that the oil reserves that European industry needs are abundant in Iraq, Britain started to foster Arab nationalism in the region. During the World War I, Britain incited a revolt in Arab geography by provoking Sharif Hussein, and subsequently captured the region by landing troops in Iraq. It also invaded Mosul, which has rich oil fields, contrary to the Mondros Armistice Agreement which was subsequently signed. British invasion of Iraq was not easy; Arab and Kurdish tribes resisted and caused big casualties to Britain. Yet, high technological weapons, numerous soldiers deployed from colonies such as India, and the English collaborators paved the way for the invasion of the region and for the formation of the conflicts/disasters that would last until today. Because the imperialism’s dirty love for oil contiues today, Iraq and Syria has been re-invaded for colonial purposes nearly a century after the World War I.
