Abstract

While trying to establish his dominance in Eastern Europe in the 18th century, the Ottoman Empire confronted with Don Cossacks; and both of them were in the interests of going to cooperate against Russia which was strengthening in this geography. Ignat Nekrasov, elected as the ataman of Don Cossacks after the Bulavin Uprising, was defeated by Russia and took refuge in the Kuban lands of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire admitted the Agnad Cossacks which was named moving from their leader’s name, to his protectorate and settled them in the strategic places in the Kuban region. The Agnad Cossacks, given to under the Crimean han control, took part with Tatars in the raids on the Russian lands as long as they were here. Their services continued till Ottoman-Russian War between 1736-1739 years. Following the complete collapse of these region by the Russian army during this war, Agnad Cossacks were transported to the Danube delta in Ottoman control due to their services there and were settled here. In this study, the process of the settlement and after it has been studied, the answer has been sought about what the Ottoman Empire intended with these settlements. In addition, relations of Ottoman-Agnad Cossacks in Eastern European politics have been evaluated by the comparative analyzes, and it has been shed light on the life of Agnad Cossacks in Danube region in the 18th century.
