Abstract

One of the movements in Turkey to adapt to the socio-economic change resulted from the industrialization wave, which started after the middle of the 20th century, has been the migration from the village to the city. It is a common case that social events which cause massive migration influence literature and art. This situation has been the topic of many films of Turkish cinema and provided to be given products in various styles. Ertem Eğilmez (as in his many other films) touches on the effects of this transformation in Turkish society with the film Köyden İndim Şehire. He displays the issues of migration from the village to the city, the peasantry/urbanism, harmony/disharmony by using a humorous style and presents a stunning panorama of Turkey. In the study, this film was regarded as a type of narrative and simultaneously considered as an analysis object. The forms of articulation of the signification in the film will be tried to be clarified by means of Algirdas Julien Greimas’ semiotic method for the analysis of narrative texts. Action areas of characters in narrative level, thematic and figurative roles in discource level reveals the superficial structure of a narrative. The discursive semantic units and isotopes at these levels describe the system arising from the correlation between the constituent elements of film’s deep structure and clarifies the process of producing meaning. In the article, all these components that constitute the surface and deep structure in the narrative will be tried to be scrutinized in terms of formal and semantic ways.
