Abstract

This article addresses the first generation of iron and steel factory workers of Karabük and the city. The emergence of Karabük and the "first workers" is tried to be handled with social, cultural and economic outputs based on the doctoral thesis' data which include interviews with workers and the documents of this period. The establishment of the Iron and Steel Factory in Karabük is mainly based on the military and political decisions of the period. The settlement of "factory" is parallel with the construction of the city of Karabük and the formation of "first workers". This study is focused social, economic and cultural aspects of social change, on the basis of the first generation of workers and the Iron and Steel Factory that was Turkey's the first investment in heavy industry. The harmonization process of first-generation workers, the difficulties and opportunities of workers in that period and 'new' social ground emerging to shape the future are the facts of this changing process. It was aimed to be used both from the workers' accounts and from historical institutional documents as well as from some studies made in time, and to evaluate the process from a multidimensional perspective.
