Abstract

Second homes are houses emerging as a result of developing tourism, used for vacation purposes often during certain periods of year and weekends. Second homes that started to appear after the industrial revolution in the world started to be widespread in our country after the 1950s. Then, there was a boom in the number of such homes on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts after the 1980s. Afterwards, there has been a considerable increase in the number of second homes in Karasu in connection with development of tourism in Turkey. The rapid development of second homes in the district can be explained with the close destination to major cities such as Istanbul, Kocaeli and Ankara as well as its natural attractions. Depending on spreading of second homes in Karasu District, the population has increased substantially as a result of visits by residents, tourists and day-to-day visitors during summers, weekends, and holidays. Tourists, summer visitors and day-to-day visitors there lead to major changes in the spatial/environmental, socio-cultural and economic structure of the district.
