Abstract

Irony is a literary art which no artist ignores who produces work in the literary world. The art of irony is preferred more in the periods when there are especially social changes and transformations. Irony which tries to reveal the hidden fact under the superficial images of the events and phenomenon, alludes to a cover which hides an unseen fact, the facts that everyone knows. In this sense, ‘Araba Sevdası’ which we examine is an ironic reflection of changing human type of the period after Reforms when great turmoil appeared. The funniness of the events he tells and Mr Bihruz typology reflect dreary thoughts rather than rough smiles. The author’s novel which he describes as a joke is like a summary of the Ottoman’s broken paradigm. Mr Bihruz is a result of outrageous ‘new’ which the hate for the ‘old’ causes. Through a character who is fake with his whole life, thought, motions and tastes, Recaizade Mahmut satires wrong westernization. The relation of the East which Bihruz addicted to the ‘New’ and the East which Ms Periveş who is fallen in love represents, is described with funny attempts throuhout the novel. These funny events are reflections of the imaginary world one character stuck between two worlds, incapable in front of the fact. The author criticizes strongly the European manners which was widespread in that period with the irony of a spendthrift snob.
