Abstract

In Oğuz Atay’s story named “Railway Storytellers”: Revisiting “A Dream”, a different world is presented to the reader apart from habitual railway stations and railway-train stories. In the story, the relationship between space and characters with physical reality in the fictional context as well as the extraordinary appearance of the experienced events convey the message, which the story endeavors to relate to the reader, to a powerful social and artistic criticism within the frame of train and railway station. Such issues as the fictionalization of the story on such main knots as train, portable storytelling, railway station, portable storytellers’ sale of the stories, which they write, to the railway passengers for a living and by the way the feedbacks they get from the passengers, stationmaster’s registration of each story as if they were official documents all touch upon on the one hand the obstacles the art has been exposed to in the face of social realities and on the other hand the struggle that has caused alienation in the artist. In this regard, train stands for the society in between the flux of life and society; railway station refers to the authorities which provide the flux in question; as for the three storytellers, they locate in the story as the essential passengers’ space that feels the most acute concerns of production, consumption and authority. Railway station, as a way station and train and passengers, which play the role of art market of the artists, will be examined in the production-consumption mechanisms and the processes of the creative art. Accordingly, in the story which the plot cannot nostalgize the themes of the expected road, travel and being on the road, causes of literary and social criticism that train and railway station have produced are going to be discussed, the traces of the vision/dream which the narrator wants to see and even experience through the sensibility of an artist, are tried to be followed.
