EVALUATION OF PRIMARY SCHOOL TURKISH COURSE BOOKS IN TERMS OF PROVERBS AND ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS

Abstract

The Turkish lesson has an important effect on the formation of the vocabulary in the students. Additionally, this vocabulary is not only formed by words but it is also supported by the groups of words. It is necessary to use the proverbs that enrich our culture and our language, in order to reach the general purpose of students' loving Turkish lessons and using Turkish in a correct and effective way, which is stated in the program of elementary school Turkish lessons. The purpose of this study is to evaluate reading texts and their effectiveness in vocabulary teaching in the textbooks of Primary School 1st-4th classes, regarding the subject of teaching proverbs, and to present the examples of activities for teaching the proverbs appropriate for the themes identified in Turkish language teaching program. In the study, where document review method among the qualitative research methods was used, primary school Turkish textbooks, which were utilized in the province of Rize in 2015-2016 academic years, were examined with regard to the activities related to teaching the proverbs used in reading texts and the proverbs in the study book. As the result, it was observed that the reading texts and vocabulary teaching activities were insufficient in terms of involving the proverbs. The proverbs in Ömer Asım Aksoy's work named “Atasözleri ve Deyimler Sözlüğü” ("Dictionary of Proverbs and Idioms") were classified according to the themes identified in the Turkish Language Teaching Program (1st-5th Classes); and activities that are suitable for the learning domains of Turkish lesson were designed.
