Abstract

The agricultural lands which are significant for Diyarbakır’s economy are diminishing every year. Total agricultural lands of Diyarbakır have degraded from 810 thousand hectares in 2003 to 571 hectares in 2009. It has been determined in a research conducted between the years 2003 and 2013 that, Diyarbakır is the third city which lost the most agricultural lands. The aim of the study is to present the impact of the areal development of Diyarbakır between 1975 and 2015 on the agricultural lands surrounding the city by distinguishing the aforementioned development into certain periods. The approach and the methodology in the study; the urban area in the years 1975-1985-1995-2005-2015 has been uploaded to ArcGIS with the help aerial photos and satellite images. The house settlement profile defined by the urban area has been marked based on the dates, and the periods between these dates have been analyzed numerically. Considering the main directions, “Directional Growth Analysis” has been made to evaluate the most specific direction of the areal growth and the results it can bring into light. According to the study, the urban area has grown more than 5 times. It has been revealed that as the city expanded based on 187 hectares per year of structuring on average, a significant portion of the urban development direction progressed towards I. and II. class agricultural lands.
