Abstract

The Greek uprising, which took place between 1821 and 1829, started in the Morea Peninsula and grew into the Aegean coasts and islands. Ottoman military struggled against the Greek subjects and eventually quelled the rebellion. However, with the agreement of Edirne Treaty in 1829, the independence of Greece was recognized. During the Greek uprising sometimes there were violent incidents between soldiers and rebellious and occurred numerous casualties from both sides. One of these biggest conflicts took place in 1822 in Chios Island. In this study, A manuscript named "Zuhûr-ı Fîtne-i Rum" written by the General (Muhafız Paşa) who was assigned to the island during the rebellion was viewed in this study. The aim of this study is to analyze this memoir with a critical view and analyze it according to the information it contains. This manuscript is an important source for researchers who are working or planning to work on this subject, as it addresses the Greek struggle for the independence and the Ottoman approach to this process. In this study, firstly, the manuscript was translated from the Ottoman language and then the content was analyzed. Then the manuscript was examined comparatively with the chronicles of the period. It was also discussed as a historical source on the verifiability and the falsibiality of the information derived by this manuscript. In this review, the subjective judgments of Vahid Pasha were analyzed by passing his writings through the critical filter and also the information obtained from his memories on Chios rebellion was evaluated in this frame.
