Abstract

Myth, which reflects a complex cultural reality, becomes one of the dominant instruments of national aesthetic together with the importance of folklore in the nation building system. As reflected on Turkish nationalism, myth is possible to transform into a unique source that carries on the undisturbed national consciousness, which in this respect is the reference to the national identity, and determines the norm, identifies the root, serves as a model in the solution of the current affairs, nurtures the sense of self-sacrifice and provides the uniqueness and authenticity necessary for the nation. The Ottoman intellectuals, who are aware of the nation-building experiences of the period and their cultural roots and pecularity, are searching for the development of the national spirit that will lead to national liberation in the national language and culture. According to these intellectuals, rejecting the present, myth is cure of the social and political decline of the time. Myth in this form fictionalizes dynamics of progress which should be achieved and negociated. It is the myth of Ergenekon that seeds the idea and rhetoric of liberation as a womb to be sheltered and rebirthed. The symbolism required by national aesthetics is substantially derived from Ergenekon.
