Abstract

The Coup on May 27, 1960 was the first and successful military intervention that was realized outside the hierarchical structure of the Turkish Military Forces in the history of Republic of Turkey. The Junta Management justified the coup by claiming that the country was managed badly and that it would stop the fight between brethren, and end the anti-secular practices and laws that were performed by Menderes Government. The Junta tried to create a perception through the press for the purpose of justifying the Coup and to “soften” the term “Coup” in the eye of the people. On the other hand, there were propagandas to discredit the members of the DP and mainly Celal Bayar and Adnan Menderes by blaming them with crimes like treason, bribery, corruption, establishing an oppression regime, and applying massacre. The purpose of this study is to examine the attitudes and publishing policies of Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet and Milliyet newspapers after the Military Coup. For this purpose, all the issues of these newspapers after the Coup were examined, the role and influence of these newspapers in the perception management that was applied after the Coup were investigated, and the methods used in this perception management were illustrated. As a result of the study, it was determined that these newspapers could not release news that was against the Coup, and acted in favor of the Junta in a voluntary manner.
