Abstract

Aristotle’s explanations on teleology focus more on issues related to the generation and growth of a living being. His views on teleology should be treated in a certain contrast with the philosophers who came before him, especially with the views of Democritus. For Democritus explains every movements and changes of beings with atoms and their movements in void by mechanistic explanation. Aristotle, on the other hand, says that such a material or mechanistic understanding can not give a complete explanation of nature or of everything that exists, because it is form, not matter, that gives the complete explanation of beings. According to him, the philosophers who were before him tried to explain all natural beings and their activities according to their material components. In this context, Aristotle’s explanations on beings will be analyzed through the contradictions between the two explanations.
