Abstract

In adolescence, concerns about adolescent’s distancing from mother and family is defined as mother’s seperation anxiety. Research about the influence of mother’s seperation anxiety on autonomy supportive parenting practices is very limited. Thereby, the aim of this research is to examine the mediating role of autonomy supportive and controling parenting practices between mother’s -separation- anxiety and adolescent’s outcome behaviours. 294 adolescents (168 female, 126 male) attented the study. Age range of the participants were 13.5-17.5 and the mean age was 15.7 (S = .84). Parents of Adolescents Separation Anxiety Scale, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, Psychological Control Questionnaire ve Autonomy Support Questionnaire were administered. SEM results revealed that in both male and female participants, anxiety about adolescent’s distancing predicted psychological control positively and thereby increased adolescents’ problem behaviors. On the contrary, comfort with secure base role predicted autonomy supportive practices and thereby increased positive prosocial behaviours in both male and female adolescents while also diminishing problem behaviours only in male adolescents. Results were discussed withing the scope of relavant literature.
