Abstract

It is possible to see the results of the education’s modernisation efforts that were brought about throughout the country in the field of education specific to Niğde Sanjak during the Ottoman Empire. One of the examples of contemporary education implementations that accelerated in the province of Niğde especially during Tanzimat Reform Era is the officially opening of Niğde The School of Darulmuallimin in 1905. It is observed that a specific study has not been done on the Schools of Darulmuallimin, which we have seen its first examples in Istanbul, in terms of Art History. It is known that these schools which have not been discussed architecturally have been mentioned within a lot of researches and academic studies from a historical perspective. When it is examined generally, it is seen that these structures having been built on a certain architectural typology have some similarities to the other school buildings of the period. These institutions that occurred with the idea of meeting the need of teacher, essential for the intended contemporary level of education, with The School of Darulmuallim and The School of Darulmuallimat founded in the country maintain their functions from the second quarter of the 19th century till the end of Ottoman Empire. It is seen that a School of Darulmuallimin was opened here in order to provide the required teacher need with increasing the number of the rudimentary schools in the province of Niğde in 1890s. This school gave a three-year education and the obligation of compulsory service was imposed to the ones graduating from here. It is concluded that an obscruity exists about the history and identity of the school during the land works performed in the province of Niğde and the historical literature reviews. The place of the structure in terms of Art History has been tried to determine by revealing its dating and identity as a result of archive documentaries, annuals and local consciousness scannings. The School of Niğde Darulmuallimin is presented with its unknown sides through this study.
