Abstract

This study investigates "Hoca Askeri" event which emerged shortly after the enactment of the secularized laws of the Republic of Turkey on March 3, 1924 at Grand National Assembly of Turkey in Silifke. Mehmet Askeri from Sivas, also known as "Hoca Askeri" had a role in this issue. This event, which emerged in a sensitive political atmosphere, was noticed by the political party in power and the judgement stage of the event was closely followed by national press. Hoca Askeri was sentenced to the capital punishment in the first judgment of the court and the sentence was reduced to three years of penal servitude in the second hearing of the case following the appealing. Hoca Askeri, who had been released following Sheikh Said Rebellion, was once again taken into the custody; put on trial at Diyarbakır Independence Court and executed. This study investigates the emergence of the event in question, the process of trial and its repercussions on the public opinion based on archival documents, periodicals and research works.
