Abstract

The notion of atom, whose origins are unclear, had first been examined through the use of philosophical thinking in Ancient Greece. But it was only by the times of Modern Europe that the notion of atom has turned into a scientific theory. Therefore, to be able to present the historical process of the notion of atom, it is necessary to review the histories of both philosophy and science that are intertwined regarding many subjects. Atom which has been accepted as the ultimate and principal component of all that exists and its teachings continued from Ancient Greece to Hellenistic era, Roman Empire, Islamic world and Europe following the Renaissance, respectively. Still only seen as a philosophical teaching after the Renaissance, it took until the 17th century for the teachings of atom to gain a scientific identity. By the end of the 19th century, a great number of scientists were aware of the atom. However, not being scientifically proven, the notion of atom garnered criticism for not being a subject of physics but a metaphysical one. During the 20th century, proof that scientists presented regarding the existence of atom put an end to the discussions, and atom has officially been accepted as a scientific theory. The fact that atom has become a scientific subject did not sever its ties with philosophy, and atom as a scientific truth continues to interest philosophers.
