Abstract

Interaction between language and culture is a well-known phenomenon that is often seen in multi-cultural media. The language of being a symbol of existence has a very important role in maintaining ethnic groups' self-identities living in multicultural environments and being able to sustain their existence in that society. While considering the function of language in culture transfer, it is certain that ethnic groups which cannot maintain their mother tongue, should face the danger of disappearing away from their own cultures over time. Particularly in this study, attitudes towards the main language of ethnic groups living in a multicultural environment are investigated and the theories of ethnic linguistic vitality and the concepts of language maintenance and language shift are discussed.
