Abstract

This study aims to determine the effects of central exams according to the view of the students and develop suggestions to prevent potential negativities in practice. Data of the study were gathered via a semi-structured 1 open-ended question answered by 120 students who attended to “Measurement and Evaluation” lecture in Marmara University Atatürk Education Faculty during spring term in between the academic year 2011-2012. The attendants answered the question “What are the effects of central exams in our education system?” in written. The data were analysed via qualitative research methods using content analysis. Results of the study indicated that the following topics require a great deal of effort to be improved: management and organization of the central exams, preparation of the questions, the application and evaluation, training of the exam officials, providing coordination between institutions and meeting the needs and expectations of parents, students and society. In addition, education planning and education policies aiming to remove the negative effects of central exams would be of help.
