Abstract

The Byzantine Empire was in great trouble at the beginning of the 7th century. The imperial administration had come to the point of bankruptcy and the treasure was exhausted. The army was about to collapse due to insufficient funds and the Empire was under Slavonic invasion in the Balkans. Existence of Avars in same region was also a great problem for Byzantium. In the east, the Iranians were continuing to be an increasing threat for the Empire. The Byzantine Empire captured the chance of getting rid of such a bad tableland with the riot started by Heraklius whom seized the rule of the Empireby taking the Phokas away from the throne.Heraklius, who confronted many problems during the time he has stayed in the throne nearly thirty one years succeed to solve most of them. However, the emergence of Islamic power and the irresistible rise of the Arabs at a time when problems have begun to take under control have turned into an increasingly large tragedy for Heraclius and Byzantium.
