As a general use this plant has a lot of naming in Turkish, Persian and Arabic. With the belief of protecting from death, disease, malignancy and spell this plant is commonly used in folk medicine. However it is mainly noted for evil eye and incense in Turkish culture and literature. While in folk literature the plant is mentioned as “y/üzerlik”, in texts of Divan literature its name only takes part as “sipend”. With this study, it is tried to reveal that which imaginations, similes and metaphors was come up by poets in Divan literature where harmal seed has many social and cultural factors.
