Abstract

In the aftermath of a disaster, for the disaster victims who lost their homes, most important and primary need is a shelter. In our country and around the world people are in search for a solution for sheltering problems after a disaster. But, de facto solutions are usually not adequate to meet the regional needs. In this study, emergency shelter fundamental design characteristics directly related to disaster victims were determined with the help of reviewed samples in the literature regarding emergency shelter design characteristics. The determined fundamental design characteristics were prioritized and their sufficiency with regards to disaster victims were evaluated using the result of the survey applied to disaster victims of 2011 Van – Ercis earthquake. A second online survey, comprising of questions corresponding to those in the survey directed to the disaster victims, was directed to architects as the designers. A comparison was made, on the basis of determined design characteristics, of the data acquired from designers and disaster victims as a result of these two surveys. As the result of the comparison, it was evaluated if the sufficiency of design characteristics determined from the victims' point of view correspond to the order of priority of these design characteristics from the designers' point of view.
