Abstract

It is accepted that the historic Odunpazarı settlement that formed the southern part of the city in Eskişehir, which has an uninterrupted settlement starting from prehistoric era, is established together with the Turkish era. The day-to-day date is comprised of Odunpazarı Semti Alanönü, Akarbaşı, Akcami, Akçağlan Cunudiye, Dede, Orta, Paşa, Karapınar and Şarkiye. As a result of a short survey in this area, we have identified twenty fountains built independently in the neighborhoods of Alanönü, Dede, Karapınar, Orta, Paşa and Şarkiye, which have different functions (mosque, house, etc.). The vast majority of fountains are dated to the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The construction date of some fountains could not be determined. Constructions built on water have always been important in helping cities to have social areas as well as helping to carry out religious activities in connection with it and to meet basic needs throughout history. In this context, the hammams allow the cleaning needs to be met, while the fountains take on a social function as a gathering center in the areas where they meet the water need.
