Abstract

This study was conducted to find out reading habits of secondary school students and what the factors are on students’ gaining reading habits. The study was conducted in the 2016-2017 school year. The sample of the research consists of 75 students studying in high schools in central Kırşehir. In the study, which is designed as qualitative pattern, data were collected by interview method and analyzed by descriptive analysis technique. According to the results of the research, most of the students do not spend any time reading books. A significant number of students have stated that they cannot spend enough time to read books, and students have stated the reasons as they have to work in other courses / do homework, do not like to read books and the number of hours in the school being too high. In addition, a significant number of students stated that they could not get a habit of reading books during high school. Students who acquire reading habits has claimed to gain this habit thanks to their family’s encouragement /pressure, interesting / suspenseful / curious books and effect of friends. Apart from this, the students think that the Turkish language and literature course is not contributing to the acquisition of reading habits
