Abstract

In Turkish main clauses, time suffixes such as -Ar, -AcAK and -Iyor are used to express the future time. These suffixes appear to be used with alterable probability values and meanings at different grades when drawn in main clause predicates. In the case of main clauses, these different future reference meanings are derived on the basis of information obtained from units which are larger than main clauses. In the clauses included in the compound sentences, the same suffixes are used in some cases to express the future time reference, and in some cases, the suffixes used in expressing the past time can be used. In the main clause structures, when different suffixes have different meanings and are related to the bigger language units, the occurrence of different probability values and meanings in the subordinate clause structures are more related to the time reference of the main clause predicate. Especially the suffixes expressing future reference in subordinate clause may have either wider or narrower time scope as to whether it is inflected on the main clause predicates.
