Abstract

The foundations of both Anatolian Seljuks state and Ottoman State resemble each other in many respects. When we look from Byzantine point of view, we can say that there were very great throne struggles among the Byzantine dynasties during the foundations of both Seljuks and Ottomans. Both states have benefited from these throne struggles to the utmost and gained both land and money by helping the person who would take the throne. The Byzantine took the land in the hands of the high class of nobility, the peasants and the small class of nobility, and reduced the main tax-paying sector to the poor, thus depriving the state of taxes and income. Therefore, the state weakened both financially and militarily. Moreover, when the state employed mercenaries to fight, the economy went bankrupt. Both states have an understanding of gaza and jihad. This is the concern about spreading Islam to non-Muslim lands and taking Islam away. Both states emerged becoming evident out of many beyliks. They were both founded in the frontier region. The Anatolian Seljuk State was a vassal of the Great Seljuk; The Ottoman State was a vassal of the Anatolian Seljuk state. What does this resemblance in foundation of these states mean? In both periods, Byzantium was desperate for not having the power to resist the attack on the state, it was so weak because of the pressure from outside and it was dealing with throne struggles and military problems. The Turks had the idea of fresh blood and big Gaza, Jihad. When it was accompanied by Mongol danger and the desire to discovera homeland, the will to struggle grew bigger. That’s how these two states were founded. If the foundation of the Anatolian Seljuk state and the conditions in which it was founded are known, it turns out that the foundation of Ottomans is not very original, because the conditions during the foundations of these states are almost the same. This must not mean the foundation of Ottomans is an insignificant event. We just would like to state here that the conditions these two states were founded in were the same from comparative historical perspective.
