Abstract

The brick, which is one of the basic building materials of Ottoman architecture, was produced in Brickyards with traditional methods until Tanzimat reform era. However, as a result of the Industrial Revolution, the modern bricks that began to be produced in Europe in the early 19th century began to increase in the interior market from the beginning of the 1840s, thereby reducing the competitiveness of domestic brick manufacturers in terms of price, quality and standard. On the other hand, within the context of Ottoman`s attempts of industrialization, brick factories were started to be opened in Istanbul under the leadership of government man as of the beginning of 1840s and number of these increased with the increase of incentives of Ottoman Empire to private companies who want to make industrial investments during the second half of 19th century. In the industrialization process in the second half of the century, private enterprises were at the forefront, but investments were continued under the name of the state. In this context, as in the previous periods, it was identified from the documents of the Prime Ministry Ottoman Archives that three brick factories were established in the beginning of the 1880s around Yıldız Palace, in Sütlüce and in Alibeyköy/Çobançeşme with the Hazine-i Hassa budget in order to meet the brick need of the State.
