Abstract

This study examines the opinions of Osman Şevki Bey (teacher), who wrote Turkish recitation books based on Turkish education with usul-i cedid (the new procedure) method and served as history, Ottoman linguistics and literature teacher besides administrative positions at the private school named Selanik Terakki Mektebi (Salonica Progress School) which still continues to exist under the name of Terakki Vakfı (Progress Foundation) Schools. The study is limited to the results obtained from Osman Şevki Bey's Fourth Part New Method Talim-i Kıraat (Recitation Exercises), Fifth Part New Method Talim-i Kıraat (Recitation Exercises) and Sixth Part New Method Talim-i Kıraat (Recitation Exercises). In accordance with the information obtained by means of content analysis method through his works, it has been determined that Osman Şevki is an educator who prioritizes the acquisition of spiritual values before anything else. He was a visionary who conceived education as an endless process who integrated education with everyday life and thus tried to help realize life-long learning.
