Abstract

Since the beginning of patriarchal societies, women and men’s jobs have been separated on the basis of gender, requiring women to have a mission in domestic fields. In this regard, motherhood was determined to be the most important duty defining women and to be fulfilled by them. There are many social, economic, cultural and political factors determining the motherhood of women. In fact, with the birth of nation state, motherhood became an import issue to which political circles attached great importance. The motherhood determined by political powers in the name of a national duty in modern states serves critical functions in the political arena and for the fulfillment of these functions, the motherhood is being rebuilt with some kind of ideological ideas and discourses. In some western countries, after 1970s, parallel to a new political construction, the motherhood was placed in the center of new discourses and political practices. In this way, practices specific to the private area were added to areas of intervention of political power. Politic, economic and traditional discourses of political power lay down the normative rules of motherhood. Therefore, the current study aims to discuss how motherhood has been reshaped through political discourses and practices in western countries.
