Abstract

Unions were initially created as economic supports for workers. Along the course of time, they developed despite many difficulties and acquired social and (willingly or unwillingly) political dimensions. Unions’ emergence in Turkey emerged especially late, while their improvement proved to be rather painful. All over the world, as unions grew bigger, union activities got more professional along with acquirement of new technical possibilities, on one hand. Considerable losses in the early enthusiasm were observed, on the other hand. Prone to unnecessary fears, business-owners sometimes associated unions with radical opposing political currents. But the mentioned currents did try to penetrate into those institutions solely with extreme and anti-establishment aims, whereas economic considerations with a view to welfare should have been the overweighing issues. Meanwhile, certain abuses occurred within the unions, whereby some union leaders themselves essentially neglected the workers while solely focusing on an increase of their own might, through phony unions. Nevertheless, such wrongdoing should not diminish the prestige of really honest union activities.
