Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine problems encountered in developing the basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in teaching Turkish as a native language. There is a method problem in teaching Turkish as a native language. Eventually, when teaching Turkish as a language, teaching the rules of language is the focus subject more than the skills. Issues like encouraging learners’ desire to learn the lesson, applying linguistic activities, using literary texts in teaching Turkish, developing linguistic, personal and social skills are the current issues of teaching native language. In this context a questionnaire about problems encountered of in developing the essential four skills was prepared and carried out with 170 undergraduates. The findings were evaluated and analysed by means of SPSS (descriptive statistics). The result indicates that the necessary importance for developing the basic four skills at primary and secondary schools was ignored in Turkish classes, and grammar topics were taught predominantly instead.
