Abstract

The following qualitative study examines the Literacy-Knowledge of preschool teachers and its supplementation in kindergarten. This empirical study is concerned with the practical use of the concept of Literacy by preschool teachers in regards to their general knowledge of the concept and the implementation of Literacy in everyday preschool life. Based on half-structured expert interviews, 16 preschool teachers from different institutions in Frankfurt/Germany were questioned and examined. The data was evaluated based on the qualitative content analysis. This analysis provides evidence that the respondents have comprehensive and precise knowledge in regards to literacy. The implementation of literacy, however, is profoundly influenced by the conditions provided in the different kindergartens. Thus, there are occurring obstacles based on a lack of staff and the given infrastructure of kindergartens.
