Abstract

Aka Gündüz’s novel Pure Love (Aşkın Temizi) who is a National Literature (Milli Edebiyat) author is a significant work in terms of reflecting the socio-cultural breakdown of the Turkish society in the years of First World War. In the novel, late Ottoman people’s poverty and ignorance were described in the center of small town of Central Anatolia. Superstitious folk beliefs are the characteristic of townsfolk. The social life in the town was built on superstition beliefs such as magic, fortune and sacrificed drugs. Superstitious beliefs, represents the strongest thematic power against the obstacles to modernism and positivism. The young idealist doctor devoted himself to fighting with superstition beliefs in the town. It is remarkable to be demonstrated Turkish villagers as obscurant and ignorant society by nationalist author Aka Gündüz’s novel Pure Love. Aka Gündüz, in the preface of the novel says explicitly that the stories told in the novel based on the observation of the real life.
