Abstract

During and later on disasters such as earthquake damage on social structure, disappearance of certain social norms, changes in attitudes and behaviours of humans are observed. Emotional, cognitive, behavioural, and social disorders can be detected at people who experienced earthquake and such traumas. Planning and design studies before and after disasters play an important role in relieving multifaceted injuries that earthquake has caused. The process of moving to a new and reliable residence can be challenging in terms of adaptation to a new environment. In this context after Marmara earthquake which happened in 1999 the outdoor spaces of earthquake houses that were built in Kocaeli-Yuvacık 2nd District were designed in order to aid the adaptation process of earthquake victims, a landscape design project was prepared towards the psychological and social needs of earthquake victims. The project preparation was done parallel to environmental design process. Aim, problems and user needs were determined, existing situation was analysed, data about the site were gathered (survey), function diagrams were prepared, preliminary project was carried out and the work was completed with final design. The design project was produced by Karadeniz Technical University, Directorate of Revolving Funds and implemented by General Directorate of Provincial Bank in year 2001.
