Abstract

Demirci is bordered by Balıkesir in the north, Selendi the east, Kula sub-district in the south and Gördes in the west. This small pretty district of Aegea was burnt to the ground due to a conflagration on August 25, 1950. The local people were at a loss as they had not experienced such a great fire before. As a result of the disaster, hundreds of homes and businesses became unusable. 1722 people were displaced; 42 people were injured, 6 of them being heavily injured. The disaster costed 6 million liras. After the fire, Democrat Party Government issued an order to revive and relieve the district. The local people tried to pick up the pieces but have not forgot the Demirci fire, one of the greatest fires of the Republican era.
