Abstract

In almost all societies throughout history, subordinate-superior relations, power, competence and authority have been debated in various forms besides the hierarchical relations. Groups, communities and societies result from/consist of those who manage and are managed on this hierarchical level. These facts which absolutely affect people's lives, are inevitably in interest of film-makers. The film Sarmaşık(2005) which has been directed by Tolga Karaçelik tells of power, competence and authority relations through six male characters from different social segments. The cases that ex posted in a freight ship which uses in international transportation transcend perseonal stories and almost become a country allegory. Through the use of symbols and metaphorical items, the real and the fantasy world intertwine in the film. In this paper, how the relations of competence were established in the Sarmaşık film, how ‘’The Others’’ behaved against the authority,-understanding towards the allegorical language and images that dominating film narrative-, as well as by the thematic content analysis, the film is resolved with Fredric Jamesons’s notion ‘’National Allegory’’.
