FROM PAST TO PRESENT SOCIO-ECONOMIC STRUCTURE OF ELAZIG PROVINCE AND CONTRIBUTION OF FIRAT UNIVERSITY TO IT

Abstract

Elazığ province located in East Anatolian region, resides at the upper euphrates basin. Elazığ has been an important settlement place in the history which laid on kervansarai roads connecting Anatolia with Mesopotamia and Elazığ has hosted many civiliziation. After Sultan Abülaziz came to throne in Ottoman government in 1867 the city was named as Mamürat’ül Aziz and later its name was changed into El-Azık which means the province of provisions by the proposal of Atatürk who made this suggestion during a visit to the city. Later on due to Turkish compliance and pronunciation ease the name evolved into Elazığ. In Ottoman period Elazığ was governed from Palu state whose economical development started in the early years of Turkey Republic era. Sugar, cement, mine, and marble factories are opened in the city providing job opportunities to some part of its people during the Republic era in different time periots. Industry is developed thanks to construction of one of the biggest hydroelectric power stations of Turkey (Keban) in 1976. There are two organized industrial sites in Elazığ and nearly 1500 industrial job professions are available. Education also hold an important place in the history of Elazığ. American, French and German colleges started their services in 1800s in old Harput region. Moreover from Ottoman era to today there are medressehs in which Quran and islamic disciplines are taught in the city. Today’s Fırat Universtiy is opened in 1967 under the name of “Yüksek Teknik Okul” and in 1969 it was changed into “Elazığ Devlet Mimarlık ve Mühendislik Akademisi” and finally in 1975 under the name of “Fırat University” it begin its education activities under a single skeleton. By 2015-2016, Fırat University is one of the biggest exceptional universities of East Anatolian Region and Turkey consisting of 16 faculties, more than 40 thousand students and 1700 teaching staff. In this study, we will try to give information about Elazığ’s socio-economic status and Fırat University’s contribution to it from past to today.
