Abstract

Objective The present study explored the views of university students who attended the Youth Disseminating Life Skills Program. This program was a 12-week training program aiming at helping participants acquire knowledge on, and to increase sensitivity towards child abuse and neglect. Method The sample consisted of 13 university students (10 female, 3 male: mean age 22 years; age range:20-31) who took part in the Youth Disseminating Life Skills Program. An interview guide was used during the focus group meetings. Established methods of qualitative analysis were used to analyze the interview transcripts. Results Participants’ views included nature and causes of, feelings towards child abuse, ways to prevent child abuse and barriers to prevention of child abuse. Conclusion Some ways of perceiving child abuse could be viewed as targets for initiatives aiming at raising awareness about child abuse. Other ways could be interpreted in terms of existing literature. Keywords child abuse, university students, qualitative research
