Abstract

Man ground wheat into flour in a different way in the different parts of the world. The simple and primitive mills have evolved through the ages by using power of water and other technological developments. A water mill is an important production place where the basic grains such as wheat and corn are turned into flour. The water mills in Anatolia had continued their functional existence until the end of the last quarter of 20th century. However, with the increase of population under the eveloping technical conditions, and having lost their existence to modern factories, watermills face the danger of becoming extinct today. This paper investigates the geographical characteristics of water mills, important samples of water architecture of our rural cultural heritage in Duraklı, explains their architectural and geographical attributes and discusses what can be done in order to protect them and convey their identities to future generations.
