Abstract

After the Second World War, change in world’s political conjuncture propelled many states to take local and regional measures and in this Cold War period the states strengthened their armies in order to supply the needs of military defence in case of any probable conflict. In the world of two blocks led by the USA and the USSR, Greece preferred to take place on the side of the USA and anticommunism. In this process Greece prioritized anticommunism in its domestic and foreign policy. In 1960s, the strengthening of the left opposition in Greece, led to undermine the position of the ruling right-wing party. Following the rise to power of the center left, the conflict between the political powers dragged the country to a critical political crisis. This political crisis provided a basis for a group of military officer, whom the anticommunist structuring in Greek military generated, to seize the power. On April 21, 1967 Greek Military Junta seized the power and governed the country along seven years. The junta years are a “dark period” for Greece and in this period of time, Greece acted as “alone” in its foreign policies while Greek domestic policy took form of oppressive and strict applications. The break-up event of junta was the July 1974 coup attempt of Greece in Cyprus. This case constituted a reason for Turkey to intervene in Cyprus meanwhile provided a basis for Junta to be overthrown indirectly. As a result of that, Greece rejoined democracy after the seven-year junta period. In this study, the period of Greek Military Junta which is seen as one of the darkest periods of Greek history, will be analyzed within the framework of the process of seizing the power of Colonels, their ideological background and their administration in power.
