Abstract

French playwright Molière's play George Dandin, staged in 1668, is considered by some critics as one of his most original works. Adapted to Turkish by Ahmed Vefik Paşa for the first time, the play has later been published twice. The play, also staged by State Theatre, is about tragicomic events that George Dandin, a rich peasant, experiences. George Dandin has also impact on Haldun Taner, a modern playwright in Turkish literature. In his The Cunning Wife of the Stupid Husband Taner discusses George Dandin in three different parts. Tomas Fasulyeciyan interprets the play first; then follows Ahmet Vefik Paşa’s adaptation. Finally, Küçük İsmail tries to interpret George Dandin in the improvisatorial style. This significant play of world literature, thus, is re-interpreted by a modern playwright. In this paper we will try to compare the two works in various aspects, centering on Moliére’s George Dandin.
