Abstract

One of the ways to assess and evaluate written expression skills of students in Turkish language lessons is composition questions asked in written examinations. With these questions, students are expected to explain the given topic in accordance with related text type features. It is important to ask different text types and topics to students in composition exams to teach them various text types. This study aims to determine the distribution of composition questions prepared by Turkish language teachers in terms of topic and text type. To this end, a total of 301 exam papers on 6th, 7th and 8th grades are analyzed. According to the findings of this study conducted through document review, Turkish language teachers mostly ask questions about explaining a statement/dictum/proverb/idiom or concept or defining the whole text, only a part of which is given to students. Investigating composition questions in terms of text types, it was found that there are few questions to make students apply certain text type and students are mostly asked to write a "composition" or "essay".
