Abstract

Emergence of modern hospitality industry in İstanbul has been much later than the other European cities, and dates back to around the end of the second half of the 19th century. First examples of modern hotels which were seen in Galata and Pera, differed from the traditional accommodation, cared to adopt western and modern style with their architecture, service styles and menu systems. Hotel Tokatlıyan which was opened to welcome travellers of the Orient Express and the symbol of the modern hospitality with Pera Palace, is unfortunately forgotten nowadays. The ho-tel contributed significantly to build the reputation of Beyoğlu in European and world literature as "Pera" in those days. This study includes research on the history of Tokatlıyan Hotel and it also shows important details of history of hotel management of Beyoğlu. Ac-cordingly, analyse of institutional history of Tokatlı-yan Hotel is made. In this context, some written re-sources were utilized such as books, newspapers, let-ters and some interviews were made relating to that time; study of oral history and corresponding visuals were also placed in the study. At the end of the study, the idea whether Tokatlıyan Hotel could be won again or not is evaluated in the line with the information gathered, some recommendations were made.
