SUPERSTITIOUS BELIEFS IN THE KEMAL TAHIR'S NOVELS

Abstract

Although it is proved that it is scientifically wrong, superstitious beliefs known as inclination to attributing the natural events to supernatural events are defined as phenomena which don’t have cause and effect relation with each other. The reason why the superstitious beliefs have been a contention for ages is that it isn’t based on logical and scientific explanation. But most of the superstitious beliefs are important because they are parts of religious beliefs and cultures. The social scientists define the superstitious belief as explanation of an event with supernatural and mysterious reasons. Since the ancient times, people who have been interested in mysterious and supernatural beings have interrelated the events with these beings. Besides, it is necessary not to forget that the superstitious beliefs are connected with the social structure. Socio−cultural elements like a specific place, family, policy, ethics and religion have great impact on the formation of superstitious beliefs. Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar is one of the most popular novelists dealing with superstitious beliefs, augur, witchcraft in Turkish literature. Among the social problems Hüseyin Rahmi fixed, the superstitious beliefs are important. One of the novels in which superstitious beliefs are mentioned is the book named ‘Kara Toprak’ by Reşat Enis. Superstitious beliefs are mentioned in the novels ‘Çıkrıklar Durunca’ by Sadri Etem, ‘Yılanların Öcü’ by Fakit Baykurt, ‘Yer Demir Gök Bakır, ‘Yusufcuk Yusuf’ by Yaşar Kemal. One of the mostly frequently mentioned problems Kemal Tahir mentioned in village novels is superstitious beliefs. These superstitious beliefs appear as witchcraft, being struck by an evil spirit, being a writer of charms, bad luck of black cat and technology. In this sense, in the introduction part which consists of introduction and three parts, after superstitious beliefs and existence reasons gave been mentioned, the superstitious beliefs in the novels of Kemal Tahir have been examined under the headings like witchcraft, being struck by an evil spirit and bad luck.
