Abstract

In the current study, it was aimed to determine the views of the teachers of 3rd and 4th grade classrooms about the usage of materials. With this purpose, six volunteer teachers working in the primary schools in university campus and different districts in Van were interviewed. Interview transcripts was examined and interpreted by the researcher. Based on the findings, according to the participants of the present study, the materials have to be used. In the case of not using materials, mathematics cannot be taught effectively. They explained that using materials in the classrooms resulted from beneficial learning and teaching outcomes for both teachers and students. It was added that the students could learn abstract mathematics contents by concretizing in a funny way with the help of materials. They also stated that inspite of the positive effects of the materials, the teachers had problems by accessing materials so that they could not use the materials. Moreover, some of the teachers told that they were trying to form materials by themselves but these materials were not enough. In this respect, the participants admitted that they could not teach mathematics effectively.
