Abstract

After the Artuqid ruler Nureddin Muhammed conquered the city of Diyarbakir, he made the damaged walls repaired, and restructured the gate called Urfa Kapi. On the northern aperture of the walls, over the gate he placed figured reliefs and then he commenced the construction of Ulu Beden Tower (also called Evli Beden). The successor Artuqid ruler Nasreddin Mahmud al-Malik es-Salih continued major reconstruction activities at the inner citadel of the city walls and built the Artuqid vault decorated by the relief of lion-bull struggle scene, and added the tower called Yedi Kardeş (Seven Brothers). Diyarbakir’s Artuqid era spans over the years of 1183-1232 and 1302-1394. The first part was during the reign of Hasankeyf, and the second part was during the times of Mardin Artuqids. All the figured reliefs are from the era of Hasankeyf Artuqids. This article concentrates on the iconographic features of the symbols and signs of Artuqid era figured reliefs of Diyarbakir city walls and deals on their meanings, one by one and collectively.
