Abstract

Women’s movement in Turkey after 1980 which coincides with the second wave of feminism, differs from the first wave by its debates on female body. Republican Period writer Nezihe Meriç pioneered these debates on female body and sexuality in her early stories “Menekşeli Bilinç” in 1965. In this paper, the identity of liberated woman in patriarchal society will be reviewed. Stories “Varım Diyorum İnanmalısınız”, “Menekşeli Bilinç”, “Giderek Daha Güçlü”, “Hışhışi Hançer”, “Açar da Tutku Gülleri Açar” and “Sancılı Us Bizdedir” will be analysed by feminist literary criticism. It is concluded from the study that the discourse of freedom in these stories differs from the discourses of women’s movement in Ottoman and Republican periods in terms of discovering bodies. Meriç also emphasize female sexuality and freedom by nature symbolism.
