Abstract

This study aims to examine Leibniz’s criticism of Descartes’ theory of motion. In his article A Brief Demonstration of A Notable Error of Descartes and Others Concerning A Natural Law (BD), Leibniz argues that Descartes’ theory of motion, especially principle of conservation of quantity of motion in the universe and principles of collision, violates the principle of the equality of cause and effect. Leibniz objects to Descartes’ law of conservation of quantity of motion and he formulates an alternative conservation principle. Leibniz claim that in the universe, the quantity of Vis viva has been conserved instead of quantity of motion. Leibniz offers some arguments in order to demonstrate Descartes’ laws of motion violating the principle of conservation of Vis viva and the principle of equality of cause and effect. In this paper, Leibniz’s arguments have been scrutinized and has been tried to demonstrate whether Leibniz’s criticism on Descartes is valid or not.
